What are the legal requirements for accessing an abortion in Ireland?

The legal requirements for accessing abortion services in Ireland vary depending on your specific circumstances.

In the Republic of Ireland, if you are under 11 weeks and 4 days you need to phone My Options who will give you the details of your nearerst provider. If you are under 9 weeks you will be referred to a GP. If you are 9 weeks or over you will be referred to one of the providing maternity hospitals. 

If you are over 11 weeks and 4 days (81 days - the date is based on the first day or your last period) you cannot get an abortion in Ireland unless under the following circumstances: 

You have a fatal foetal anomily and two medical practitioners are willing to sign off that the foetus will not survive beyond 28 days after birth. 

The pregnancy is a risk to your life or health. Two medical practitioners need to sign off on this. Risk includes mental health but this needs to be signed off by a peri-natal psychologist after an assessment. 

If you are over 12 weeks, you have the legal right to travel abroad for abortion care. There are financial assistance programs available for individuals seeking abortion services abroad. Contact Abortion Support Network at www.asn.org.uk 

There are women's organisations who provide telemedicine. This includes a consultation with a doctor online or over the phone. You can find more information at womenhelpwomen.org or womenonweb.org

How much does it cost to have an abortion in Ireland?

It is free to have an abortion in Ireland but you must have a Personal Public Services Number (PPSN). If you don't have one, contact My Options who will be able to help you with this. 

Abortion is free in Northern Ireland if you live there. If you are not from there you may have to pay. There are financial assistance programs available for individuals seeking abortion services abroad. Contact Abortion Support Network at www.asn.org.uk
